Another Christmas romance comedy, this one starring Emilia Clarke, Henry Golding and Emma Thompson. I have to admit, this is an incredibly Christmassy movie, with the main protagonist working in a store which only sells Christmas items, combine that with her primary outfit being dressed as an elf. Additionally, the name of this movie is ‘Last Christmas’ – many of you may recognise that this is a very well known Christmas song by Wham! Along with the entire movie being extremely festive, it is also based around the music of Wham, in particular, George Michael. So if you’re not a fan of either of these two things, then stay clear of this film!
The characters in this film are refreshingly different. However, Emilia Clarke as the main protagonist, Kate, can be a little difficult to like straight away. Although, her character development over the film then becomes more heart warming to watch. There are many great characters to appreciate, Henry Golding as Tom is definitely one. His character is one that is the most refreshingly different, he is quirky and fun, the audience must adore his presence on screen. As per usual, Emma Thompson is fantastic, she is in any role! Furthermore, I really enjoyed the characters of Santa (Michelle Yeoh), Marta (Lydia Leonard) and Jenna (Rita Arya).
Amongst the romance comedy, there is a drama to become invested in. There were many moments that allowed me to have a little giggle and even moments of the complete opposite. I really did enjoy the modern feel to this film, it was heart warming at times and even made you think about the good things there are in life and need to be appreciated, rather than ponder over the things you wish you could have like many romance comedies are superb at doing. ‘Last Christmas’ really does go on a journey with Emilia Clarke’s character which makes it so enjoyable to watch as her character grows and you understand her a lot more deeply. I wouldn’t say this is the best Christmas film I’ve ever seen because I believe it is incredibly difficult to beat the classics such as ‘The Grinch’ and ‘Love, Actually’. But, ‘Last Christmas’ was still able to captivate its audience and definitely delivers a Christmas festive feel.
