Peter Kay has designed this simple television comedy as an easy watch to put a smile on your face. With an extremely simple concept, Peter Kay plays John who is paired with a colleague from work to car share. This colleague is polar opposite to the quiet, rule-obeying John, it’s Kayleigh (Sian Gibson). We watch as John picks up Kayleigh every day to go to work in a store that suspiciously looks like Tesco, and then their drive back – simple as.
‘Car Share’ is such an easy watching show and it’s so clever that something so simple as a car share to and from work can be so funny. I do think that it is probably a required taste and does get some getting used to. The first time I watched it, I wasn’t the biggest fan. But I recently rewatched, from the beginning this time, and the simplicity of it was just so easy going it made me giggle and smile. Furthermore, some of the humour is adult humour so it is for a more mature audience, although it’s not in your face rude, just some simple references.
There are many aspects which are comedy gold. We watch just ordinary conversations between John and Kayleigh as they get to know each other. We listen to Forever FM radio with timeless hits, with outrageously ridiculous adverts that are so stupidly funny. Also watch out for the signs reading them as the car drives the usual route to and from work as again they are purposely funny. Peter Kay is skilled in taking the mickey out of simple every day things by over-exaggerating their presence and pushing them to the limits of ridiculous.
Kayleigh is a fantastic character to watch. Her naive and clueless attitude is again so simply comical. She overshares and non-stop talks which is humorous as we watch the response from John. We occasionally dive into Kayleigh’s mind as she dreams of being in old music videos that are over the top and absurd. I can appreciate these songs as they belt along to them, I find that I’m also doing the same, enjoying the old classics.
‘Car Share’ in it’s simplicity and crazy limits is perfect to watch. It’s not bust your gut hilarious but just puts a smile on your face. There are definitely hilarious worthy moments that I have laughed out loud at. These two surely go through the most random events (some of which are probably not the everyday). John and Kayleigh are both great to watch on screen. Watch John in his fiat 500 driving around making the simple act of talking amusing.
