Reign (2013 – 2017)

Mary, Queen of Scots, has been engaged to marry the next King of France since they were six. Now that they are older, things don’t seem as simple as they used to. Even though ‘Reign’ is based on real historical people, this show is far from historically correct. For starters, they live in French Court and not a single one speaks French. There may be some loose factual connections to the past, but there are many fictitious characters and plots within this dramatised version of the 1500s.

There is non-stop drama in this show. There are many shocking twists and unpredictable turns. The actors are excellent. They are all able to cry on cue incredibly well, which is important for a drama such as this one. Along with the drama, this show does execute a lot of emotion. So with the actors crying on cue, safe to say, I’ve cried many times during this series also. Toby Regbo, Adelaide Kane, Megan Follows, my personal top three actors in this show – phenomenal, outstanding! I think you can tell a great actor by how quickly you can fall in love with their character, Francis (Toby Regbo) is one of those characters. With the drama of politics between Kings and Queens, there is a supernatural element as well. However, it’s cleverly done as it was the belief of that time anyway. It’s not over the top or forced, it’s more the belief of the characters of visions and fate.

This show is so aesthetically pleasing to watch. The balls, the costumes, the landscapes, all amazing. In particular, the ball gowns are extraordinary! To be able to dress up in an expensive ball gown that they have on this show would be so amazing. Furthermore, the music is also brilliant, the amount of songs that have been added to my playlist is unbelievable! ‘Reign’ looks expensive and feels expensive; which when we’re watching about Kings and Queens of France, how could we expect any different?

I became very obsessed with ‘Reign’. I sped through seasons one and two like no tomorrow. They are truly fantastic seasons. I was warped into the drama and the entire aesthetic, wrapped up in the romance, in the unpredictability of politics. But then came season three, half way through and I found it much harder to watch. The first two seasons are definitely the best in the show. I can’t comment on the later seasons, because all of my motivation to watch them vanished, however, I could happily sit and watch the first two seasons again.
