Bones (2005 – 2017)

Having recently discovered this show, it’s a shock it’s taken me this long to find a love for it since it began airing over 15 years ago. Once I started watching, the obsession had immediately overtaken. ‘Bones’ is an excellent show. I love it!

Based on Kathy Reichs’ novels, ‘Bones’ follows forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz): an unlikely pairing with polar opposite views on life. Together, they solve murders by analysing the bones of victims.

I really do love all of the characters. They’re development is great and they are easy to just watch and appreciate. Temperance Brennan is an excellent character, one that is rarely shown on television. She is a self-assured character, confident in her logic and genius intellectual abilities. She is incredibly blunt and openly says what’s on her mind, despite potentially affecting other’s feelings. Nevertheless, she has created a team at the Jeffersonian who love and respect her. This team over the series has mostly stayed the same, although there have been a few changes (just like a lot of other long-running shows).

Next to Brennan is Agent Booth; he is a phenomenal character. You can’t help but just love him with his cocky belt buckle, wacky socks and sleek suits. Whereas Brennan believes in logic and science, Booth is one of faith and connecting to humans to solve crimes. He believes in his gut and follows hunches to solve the murder. His loyal protection of Brennan is a bond that is adored on screen by its audience.

Dr Hodgins (T. J. Thyne), otherwise known as the “bug and slime guy” has to be one of my favourite characters. Along with Dr Sweets (John Francis Daley), the psychologist. Finally, even though when she was first introduced I really disliked her, I have also really grown to love Dr Saroyan (Tamara Taylor). Saying this, it is actually difficult to find any characters I don’t like. They all bring their own personality and differences onto the show and are great in their own way.

‘Bones’ has a perfect combination of mystery, intriguing crimes to solve and comic relief. In each episode the Jeffersonian team discover new bones and solve another crime. Although, even though all the episodes follow a similar pattern it doesn’t become repetitive. Each episode feels different in its crime and the continuation of the character developments are what makes this show great to watch. I love that some episodes are tense and thrilling, while others have more comedy and are more light-hearted. Sometimes they’re just stupid and silly, but I still love them.

I do have to admit some of the episodes have not aged well. Alike to other early 2000s shows, there are a few comments which are not sensitive at all. Although, thankfully these are minimal.

‘Bones’ is such an easy watching crime show. It’s got great characters, interesting plots and crimes to solve, plus overall just addictive to continue through the series. It is just another FBI show, but it’s one that is excellent! With the series going on for 12 seasons, it’s easy to keep you occupied for a while!
