Sherlock: The Abominable Bride (2016)

Alternatively…

This episode is set in a different era. During the 19th Century, we have a completely different aesthetic. The Victorian era has been brought to life in costume, language and setting. This Christmas episode reflects an alternative world of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson. Sherlock’s hair is scraped back, John Watson wields a mighty moustache and Lestrade mysteriously looks like Ebenezer Scrooge with intense sideburns. Uncovering the other characters in this 19th Century London is creative and enticing.

Like all of the other episodes of this phenomenal show, ‘The Abominable Bride’ is so cinematically clever. The aesthetic is so pleasing for the audience and addictive to watch unfold. The mystery of this episode is one to become completely obsessed with. It immensely differs from previous episodes and once again throws the audience into a tail spin of unsure emotions. It’s so cleverly created!

I remember watching this Christmas Special when it was released years ago. I watched it with the family and it terrified my little brother. Watching it again now, and the entire mystery is still creepy. The crime is eerie and ghostly. I have to mention Mrs Hudson as she is on top form in this episode, her one-liner comical quips are fantastic. ‘The Abominable Bride’ is another Sherlock episode to delve and escape into. It’s so addictive to watch as your eyes become glued to the screen.

Lastly, this is an episode ending the third series or beginning the fourth series, however you want to see it. Therefore, it does entail spoilers of previous episodes and does make much more sense if watched in order.
